AI For Good

ACAIM is a 501c3 not for profit organization established on August 17th, 2024 by Melvin Speisman MD, FACP and Ann Slasuraitis FACP. Both physicians are fellows of the American College of Physicians and have had over 20 years of experience in academic medicine as hospitalists and core faculty members of an internal medicine residency program and have been passionate about teaching medical students, residents, and attending physicians.

The organization was formed in response to the need for academic physicians to integrate artificial intelligence into both medical education and patient care. Regarding the educational arm of the organization, through the AAMC community on AI and Medical Education and AMSA leadership, we networked with professors nationwide to determine how AI will be incorporated into the medical school curriculum for this years entering class. This project is currently being submitted for publication and followed up with an extensive curriculum on AI and Medical Education which will be made available for all medical schools. More recently, we have partnered with residency programs to provide a monthly lecture series on AI and Medicine. In addition to medical students and residents, we will be offering a certificate program on AI and Medicine in the form of online executive education. This is in line with our mission to educate and mentor learners at all levels: undergraduate (UME), graduate (GME), and continuing medical education (CME). CME credits will be offered for the certificate program, attendance at the annual scientific session, and for completion of the artificial intelligence and medicine self assessment program (AISAP).

Regarding the research arm of the organization, membership includes an invitation to join the ACAIM Research Lab which publishes on AI as it relates to all subspecialties of medicine. This is a virtual lab space that meets regularly on zoom and includes students, residents, and world renowned professors from all across the nation. To join the lab group members must agree to be the first author on a paper.  Many of the ACAIM Research Lab participants joined while enrolled in the MIT and Harvard AI and Healthcare Certificate Programs. Faculty that lead the subspecialty lab groups include the following Founding Fellows:

  • AI and Cardiology: Philip Gideon MD
  • AI and Pulmonary: Niranjan Jaganathan MD, Karim Tadlaoui MD, Hasnain Bawaadam MD, H. Bryant Nguyen MD
  • AI and Critical Care: Don Teed MD and Leo Anthony Celi MD
  • AI and Nephrology: Maria Khan MD
